Tip-oldefar Niels Nielsen
See below
Her ses dåbsnotatet for de to brødre i Ejstrupholm Kirkebog.
De fik to sønner.
Thorkild’s Great Great Grandfather.
(mfff means: mother’s father’s father’s father)
Niels Nielsen and Jens Kjærsgaard Nielsen are twins and were born April 21, 1816, baptized at home April 24, and were presented in Ejstrupholm Church on July 1, 1816. Here is the baptize note of the two brothers in Ejstrupholm Church record. He was confirmed 28 April 1831 in Ejstrupholm.
Niels Nielsen moved later on from Ejstrupholm to Hyrup at Stouby in Bjerre Herred. He married Maren Esbensdatter in Stouby Church May 31, 1844. She was the daughter of Esben Sørensen and Karen Marie? and was born in Bjerre on 7/12 1815-16, because the marriage note tells us that she was 28 years old.
Maren gave birth to a dead boy 17/2 1845: “The child came to the world by the help of a midwife, without the use of instruments,” as noted in the Stouby Church records. It is also mentioned that Niels was a smallholder.
Niels Nielsen died 11 June 1888 and Maren Nielsen died November 9, 1886. Both are buried in Stouby Cemetery.
From now on, the family name is NIELSEN. This is related to a new law in 1828, after which all persons should have a family name. So far, it had been that in the countryside and in small villages that people only had one name. But to know who Hans was, they added the names of his father: Mads. It came to Hans Madsen – Mads’ son or Maren Nielsdatter – Niels’s daughter. The addition could also be the place where they lived, farm or village, e.g. Kjærsgård.
Therefore, it was the father’s “last name” at that time (1828), which became the family’s family name.
E.g.:
……………………Hans Madsen
…………Niels Hansen
Niels Nielsen – and it became the family name or last name in the future!
So it was for the six children of Maren and Niels. However, with the slight deviation that the daughter in the church record was noted “Nielsdatter” – (Niels’s daughter) it was, however, some years since it was changed. She was later called Nielsen. All the children are baptized in Stouby Church.
… Jesper Nielsen born January 7, 1846.
… Niels Nielsen born February 6, 1848. We know he was working at Niels Beck in Gammelby when he was confirmed. We do not know more!
… Kristiane Marie Nielsdatter born May 22, 1850 – she got married to Kristian Sloth, who was a factory worker in Horsens. They had two sons.
… Karl Nielsen born April 13, 1852. He was trained as a tailor and settled in Ørum near Daugård. He died young, May 16, 1875, 23 years old.
… Mikkel Nielsen born October 27, 1854. He was also working at Peter Pedersen in Gammelby. Mikkel was trained as a smith and ran a smith store in Bjerre. He married Nielsine Kirstine Thomsen from Vrønding, and they got 3 children. Nielsine died quite young of tuberculosis. Mikkel married again and then worked at Staldknægts Fabrikker in Horsens.
… Jens Kjærsgaard Nielsen born June 25, 1858, named after his uncle. He was taught in the shoemaking profession, but was later employed at the post office in Stouby. He married Gyda Mortensen from Barrit and they got three daughters and two sons. Gyda died as a 40 year old of tuberculosis, and Jens married again, to Marie Kirstine Sørensen.
It was Jesper Nielsen, who became Thorkild’s great-grandfather.
All of this is mentioned because we behind the information have a good impression of the mid 1800’s.
